I almost wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit hole…
But I did! Well over a decade ago when Resin Eye Making first became an obsession of mine.
In early 2000, there was limited options when it came to UV Resins that could be “baked” with polymer clay without it bubbling, melting, cracking, and/or yellowing. Many doll artists used Lisa Pavelka’s “Magic Gloss” and seemed happy, but many artists, including myself, shared a much different opinion.
One of the main issues I experienced when trying to work with Magic Gloss is that it yellowed significantly. It would also crack, shrink, and fracture quite easily when exposed to clay baking temperatures (230F-275F)
This was the case with most UV Resins at the time, and still even today.
A lot of polymer clay doll artists wouldn’t even attempt UV Resins because it had such a bad reputation for yellowing when exposed to heat, so they would use Liquid Fimo… which of course was discontinued for a short time. It’s made it’s way back as Liquid Fimo 8051. Liquid Fimo is actually quite good at doming small eyes, but it is quite tricky to get it “just right”.
When I say I tried literally everything, I truly do mean – everything. From acrylic nail gels to dozens of different UV Resins for both hobbyists and professional use – it was a true rabbit hole of endless trial and error, and nothing seemed to ever really do the trick.
A little over ten years ago, I ran across a product called Qiao Qiao UV Resin Hard. I reluctantly purchased a bottle and decided to put it through my usual testing which involved a heat test, scratch test, yellowing test, and solvent test. After passing each phase with flying colors, I literally had to pinch test myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

After curing several small pools of the UV Resin Hard on a white tile, I then placed it in my oven at 230F and watched closely for any signs of trouble.

I always did this OUTSIDE and with plenty of ventilation in an oven strictly designated for clay crafting. Some plastics and resins can produce toxic fumes, and I do not suggest or condone anyone doing such things without accepting full responsibility and risk for their own safety.
I then increased the temperature to 250F, and then 275F for intervals up to 15mins each. Surprisingly, there was no sign of yellowing, or any other visual issues. It was at that moment I knew, I found “The One”.
